  • Set realistic expectations before you head out. Include all shopping members in the discussion.
    • Where will you be shopping?
    • Is there a time limit to be spent in various stores or locations?
    • Will lunch be included?
  • Know your budget.
    • How much money will be spent on clothing, shoes and other products?
    • Empower each member to work within financial limits. This is a great way to teach children about money choices.
  • Take inventory before you head out.
    • Are there items from the previous year that can be recycled into the current year?
  • Talk as a family about what is needed, verses what is wanted.
    • If you are on a tight budget, try to allow for one `want’ per child.
  • Consider allowing excited little shoppers to pile items in the shopping cart.
    • Once selections are complete, help to pare it down by comparing items and prices. This is a great way to help children learn to make spending decisions.
